Legendary Rock ‘n’ Roll wildman, the ‘Godfather of Punk Rock’ Iggy Pop will appear along with Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Florence and the Machine, the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Terrence Malick‘s new film, a music drama called “Song By Song.”
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, known by his friends as Jimmy, Pop, although known primarily as a musician is credited with having appeared in 39 movies. He had a cameo role on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). (“DS9” producer Ira Steven Behr was at the time and is to this day a major fan.) Computer animators on Peter Jackson‘s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) used his movement and body as a basis for the character Gollum. And footage of him writhing on stage is used as the opening of and to separate segments on Australia’s longest running and most popular music video show Rage (1987).
Here’s the premise: “In this modern love story set against the Austin, Texas music scene, two entangled couples — struggling songwriters Faye (Rooney Mara) and BV (Ryan ), and music mogul Cook (Michael Fassbender) and the waitress whom he ensnares (Natalie Portman) — chase success through a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal.”
The film has previously been referred to as “Weightless.” now entitled “Song to Song” a Broad Green Pictures will release on March 17, 2017 Malick has been working on the project for more than five years. The director filmed during multiple festivals and shows in Austin as early as 2011.
