The movie Triggered, written and directed by Mace Walker has recently appeared at the historic Tampa Theater, Tampa, Florida. Prominent among the young actors who appear in this movie is a young actor from Michigan. Her name is Kayden Bryce.
Kayden, age 17, is well on her way to establishing herself as a noteworthy actor. Despite her age, she is already a SAG-E actress and she has appeared in 36 IMDb credited roles. As both a lead and supporting actress she has appeared in such films as “Bennett’s Song,”” Triggered,”” Just Another Dream” and “Evil Takes Root.”
Says her mother, actress/ screenwriter/wardrobe Melinda Bryce beaming with pride, “She (Kayden) has been blessed with a lot of great opportunities and she’s worked with some incredible Michigan film people. And Ohio too! ”
In the three-plus years that Kayden has worked in film, she has worked with such Michigan directors as Tony Tale, Harley Wallen, Nicole Bowers Wallace, Paul Schneider, and Chris W. Freeman (Ohio). And she has worked on set with actors including Dean Cain, Eugene Brave Rock, Tara Reid, Dennis Haskins, Richard Tyson, John Savage, Billy Wirth, Sean Carrigan, Nicholas Gonzales, Scout Taylor-Compton, Keir Gilchrist, and Billy Boyd, among others.
Kayden caught the acting bug when she was just five. It was then that she appeared in her first stage production. Eight years later, she was approached by a producer who asked her whether she would like to appear in films. For her, it was love at first take.
Her first role in a film was as Tiffaney in the Donn R. Nottage, Mikhail Tot production “In Guns We Trust (2017).” In 2018 alone she appeared in no fewer than eleven roles. She has since been credited with being a writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and producer. This is quite a list of accomplishments for someone who is not yet out of school.
As well as being a senior in high school in which she maintains a high grade-point average, she works two jobs and still has time to hang out with her friends. But, according to Kayden’s mother, they don’t often talk about Kayden’s film career.
Screenwriter and director of “Triggered,” Mace Walker, sent Kayden a friend request on Facebook. Recounts Melinda, “They had some mutual friends in the industry. When she posted the audition notice, Kayden submitted for two roles— Lana and Christi. Mace felt that she fit her vision of Christi and she was offered the role. Over the last 2 years, the production has flown Kayden down multiple times and put us up in St. Pete, Florida for a week at a time for filming. She had the lead role in the film, and it was one of the most emotionally challenging roles she’s ever played.”
Dealing with such teen issues as depression, anxiety, abuse, drugs, suicide, and violence, “Triggered” has been a screenplay on which Mace Walker had worked for three years. She started working on the film when she was 17. It was then that a gunman opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. This had a domino effect on school shootings. Within a week of these shootings, there were an additional 850 shootings, leaving 250 people dead, and over 500 people injured.
After the Parkland shootings, Walker said she was “triggered” to start writing after living in a climate of fear due to school shootings and other issues. It was her desire to spark a conversation about issues that teens have had a tough time talking about. So it was only appropriate that mostly everyone who worked on the film, including the cast and producers, are young.
Since“Triggered’s” trailer has been released, the story is already offending people with its posters and quotes. Said Mace Walker in a fundraiser on behalf of Eleanor Cortez, “Hi, I’m director and writer, Mace Walker… and I’m here to tell you that this is EXACTLY what we want. Why? Because gun control, depression, teen suicide, and bullying SHOULD offend you.
“Triggered” will not only push the limits, it will disqualify all boundaries and taboos in cinema. “Triggered” focuses on the mindset of your “everyday troubled American teen” through the eyes of six disturbed high school students whose traumatic experiences are swept under the rug as they hide behind false personas around their acquaintances and peers. After months of research on teenage murders and mental disease, “Triggered” was written to illustrate realistic and dark occurrences that may be ignored in our schools that could lead to possible danger or death.”
Kayden was one of the seven young actors who played key roles in this movie. She appears as a lead and the featured actor in “Triggered.” She appears as Christi Martin in what is an emotional rollercoaster of a movie dealing with sexuality, self-acceptance, suicide, broken homes, teenaged logic and mentality, coping mechanisms, and mental disorder.
Suffering from an undiagnosed personality disorder that disturbs her with reoccurring paranoia, Christi is convinced her school is against her and seeks revenge to tell her story. The film combines psychological methods with experimental filmmaking to create an awkward, surreal, and isolating atmosphere meant to terrify, depress, and challenge its viewers as they’re sucked into Christi’s twisted world of escapism.
