Born in Athens, Greece, Tommy Lee (born Tommy Lee Bass) was the founding member of Motley Crue. In the 1980s TVs hottest TV star Heather Locklear (Tommy’s second wife) and Tommy marry. They divorced in 1993.
A good fit for the role
Tommy Lee and Romanian-American Detroit, MI actor/model Dennis Marin share more in common than a 1980-like shock of hair. There is the proximity of the countries of their National origin. Although Marin was not born in Romania, he is of Romanian descent, his family line originates just 500 miles north of Greece where Lee was born. They are both musicians.
How did this Michigan actor land this role
Says Marin, “I heard about the audition from my manager Bennie Taylor who owns Jon Tomus Talent! He told me about the project and that it was for a rock n’ roll legend. I had no idea it was for Tommy Lee until I recieved the breakdown. I freaked out. I had auditioned for both Tommy Lee and Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, and would have been happy to play either of the two. But, during the self-tape process at Bennie’s office, I knew I would much rather have played Tommy Lee, and Bennie knew it as well! So, I kept my fingers crossed for a callback but wasn’t holding my breath because I was competing with the reat of the world.
(The script) was sectioned off into bits of Heather’s life. I appeared within the first 5-10 mins of its runtime, and was on and off for approximately 10 mins.
Here Dennis Marin can be seen in the original slate which earned him the role. Says Dennis regarding this audition, “I was super proud of myself and I think I did pretty good at portraying Tommy Lee! I grew up listening classic rock music and Motley Crue was, and still is, one of my all-time favorite bands.
The next day, I was at work when I recieved a call from Bennie, screaming on the other line that I got a callback!! AMS (Andy Streitfield) Pictures said they liked my audition for Tommy Lee amd wanted me to do the audition once more, but clean-shaven (I had a full-grown beard at the time.) Bennie helped me with the audition the same day, and the next morning, AMS called and offered me the role!
Recounts Bennie Taylor about Dennis’ audition, “Well as soon as I seen the breakdown I knew I had to submit Dennis for that role! And let me tell you, Dave, he blew it out the box! I had him blow out and spray his hair, and I also brought my guitar for him to use! We filmed the audition at Jon Tomus Productions late at night. We had a blast!”
Here Dennis Marin tickles the ivories.
